TreeAge Software Installation and Authorization Tips

If you can't find an answer to your question here, please e-mail your question to Technical Support.

Information on this page:

Installation vs. Authorization

In order to be fully functional, TreeAge software must be authorized after installation. Without a license authorization, the software will run in trial mode.

You are given a serial number after purchasing a product from TreeAge. The serial number is used to authorize the software after installation.

You can also download a full installer from the Main Support Page. Login using your email address and serial number. You will be presented with a link to the most recent release to which you are eligible based on your license/maintenance agreement.

License Types - Annual vs. Perpetual

TreeAge Software products are licensed with either an Annual License or a Perpetual License.

With an Annual License, the software will run for the duration of the license period. When the license period expires, the software will no longer run until a new license is purchased.

With a Perpetual License, the software will run even after the maintenance period expires. However, technical support and upgrade protection is no longer available after the maintenance period ends. Support for a Perpetual License can be extended by renewing the Maintenance Agreement.

System Requirements

To install and run TreeAge Pro, your computer must meet the following system requirements.

  • The operating system must be Microsoft® Windows™ 98 or higher (including Windows Me/98/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista). Windows 95 is not supported.
  • Under Windows 2000/XP/Vista, the software installation may require administrator privileges.
  • RAM requirements vary primarily by the size and complexity of the models being built and the analyses being run. The suggested minimum is approximately 128 MB. Very complex simulations may use more – to ensure top performance, add the maximum amount of RAM supported by your computer and your version of Windows.
  • Approximately 30 MB of free space is required on your hard disk.

Mac and Linux Computers

TreeAge Pro runs on the Windows Operating System only. However, TreeAge Pro will run on Mac and Linux computers through Windows emulation, which can be achieved through Boot Camp, Parallels, VMWare and possibly other options. Please note that you will need to setup your Windows environment prior to installing TreeAge Pro.

Running TreeAge Pro Under Windows Vista

Under Windows Vista, when installing TreeAge Pro Windows will prompt you to verify that the installer from an unknown publisher should be allowed to execute. To install TreeAge Pro, you should allow the installer to run.

Under Windows Vista, when the TreeAge Pro application is run Windows will prompt you to verify that a program called "cknotrunning.exe" from an unknown publisher should be allowed to execute. This application is part of the TreeAge Pro license manager, and should be allowed to run.

To view .hlp files on your Windows Vista computer, you'll need to download the WinHelp viewer from Microsoft. Your PC will need to pass the "Windows Genuine Advantage" validation. The size of the download is a bit over 600 kB. It works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista.

Installing/Running Under 64-bit Windows

TreeAge Pro can be run under 64-bit Windows operating systems. During installation, license manager setup error messages will occur. Just click OK.

Upon running TreeAge Pro for the first time, another license manager error message will occur. Just click OK. Use Internet Authorization to unlock the software with your serial numbe (manual authorization will not work).

Installation

Upon completion of your purchase, you will be presented with a page that includes your Serial Number and a download link for the appropriate product. You will need both to install and authorize your software.

Download the installer file and execute it on your computer. After installation, follow the instructions below for Internet Authorization or Manual Authorization.

Updating to the Latest Release

Periodically, free maintenance updates (including bug fixes and minor changes) will be posted to the TreeAge web site. TreeAge Pro will provide monthly reminders for you to check for updates; you are urged to do so. At any time you can check for available patches from within TreeAge Pro by clicking on the Help menu, choosing TreeAge on the Web, and Check for Updates. The latest update, if any, will be located and downloaded to your computer, after which the update installation will begin.

You can also download a full installer from the Main Support Page. Login using your email address and serial number. You will be presented with a link to the most recent release to which you are eligible based on your license/maintenance agreement.

Uninstalling TreeAge Software Products

Before uninstalling a licensed version of TreeAge Pro, you should Transfer your license based on the instructions provided above. You will not be able to unlock your license on a new computer unless you first use the License Manager to transfer your existing license out from the old computer.

Once you have transferred your license (if necessary) and are ready to uninstall the software, open the Windows "Add/Remove Software" control panel and select "TreeAge Pro 2006" from the list of uninstallable applications.

If you are uninstalling a TreeAge Software product with the Excel Module, you will need to turn off the TreeAge Pro Addin. In Excel, select Tools>Add-Ins from the menu. Uncheck the TreeAge Pro Addin.

License Manager - Internet Authorization

The TreeAge License Manager authorizes the software on your computer. If no active license is authorized on your computer, the License Manager will start automatically. It can also be started from the Help menu.

The License Manager generates a unique Site Code based on your computer hardware. You enter the Serial Number provided to you at the time of purchase. The Internet Authorization function sends the Site Code and Serial Number to TreeAge. If the Serial Number has an authorization available, TreeAge automatically returns a Site Key, which is installed on your computer. Once the Site Key is installed, a message box will state that the software is authorized.

License Manager - Manual Authorization

The Manual Authorization function will send the Site Code and Serial Number to TreeAge via the when you click on the Submit Codes button. You then paste the resulting Site Key back into the software and unlock the software.

If the computer is not connected to the Internet, you can open the on a separate computer with Internet access. Enter the Site Code and Serial Number into the page. Then enter the resulting Site Key back into the computer without Internet access.

License Manager - Transfer License

You can transfer your license from one computer to another. Open the License Manger on the first computer. Then click on the Transfer Out Via Internet button. This will deauthorize the license on your computer and release the license, making it available to authorize the software on another computer.

If the computer is not connected to the Internet, click on the Kill License and Confirm button. Then send the kill code to sitekey@treeage.com.

TreeAge Support will reauthorize the Serial Number and return your email. The Serial Number is then available to authorize software on another computer.

Getting an Additional Authorization

If you purchase a single-user license and wish to use the software on multiple computers, it is possible to obtain an authorization for the second installation provided you are the sole user of both computers. For more information on obtaining a second authorization, send an e-mail to sitekey@treeage.com; please include your serial number.

Installing the Excel Add-In

The TreeAge Pro Excel add-in is included with the TreeAge Pro Excel and TreeAge Pro Suite products. The add-in can be loaded in Excel either automatically or manually. In attempting to have Excel load the add-in automatically, the TreeAge Pro installer adds a few keys to the user registry. However, if a system administrator installs TreeAge Pro on a computer, these keys will be added to the registry for the administrator instead of the end user of the software. In this case, additional steps are required to add the keys under the end user.

If the end user has privileges to write to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER section of the registry, this is a quick process.

Method 1

  1. Logon to the computer as the end user.
  2. Open Excel, go to Tools > Add-ins...
  3. If "TreeAge Pro Addin" does not appear, open it by clicking Browse... (e.g., look under C:\Program Files\TreeAge\TreeAge Pro\Excel).
  4. Check the box next to "TreeAge Pro Addin" in the list.

Method 2

  1. Logon to the computer as the end user.
  2. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder that contains the TreeAge Pro software (frequently C:\Program Files\TreeAge\TreeAge Pro).
  3. Open the folder named “Excel” within the TreeAge Pro software folder.
  4. Double-click on the shortcut named “Register Add-in”. This will add the necessary registry settings.

If the end user does not have privileges to write to the user registry settings, then there are additional steps required.

  1. Temporarily add the role “Power Users” to the end user’s local computer account.
    1. Logon as an administrator.
    2. Right-click on the “My Computer” icon on the desktop and select “Manage” from the popup menu.
    3. Navigate the tree in the left pane to Computer Management>System Tools>Local Users and Groups>Users.
    4. Double-click on the end user in the right pane. A user properties window will open.
    5. Click on the “Member Of” tab.
    6. Click on the Add button.
    7. Enter the “Power Users” group.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Logoff the computer.
  2. Add the user registry settings.
    1. Logon as the end user.
    2. Perform the steps listed above, under Method 1 or 2, for users with privileges to write to the user registry settings.
    3. In Excel, select Tools>Add-Ins from the menu to ensure that the TreeAge Pro Addin is listed and selected.
    4. Logoff the computer.
  3. Remove the role “Power Users” from the end user’s local computer account. This is necessary if you want to return the security settings to their original state.
    6. Select Power Users from the list of user roles.
    7. Click on the Remove button.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Close the Computer Management Window.

The registry settings added are located in the following registry folders, where "%vers%" is the current Office version (11.0 for Office 2003):

  • My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\%vers%\Excel\Add-in Manager
  • My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\%vers%\Excel\Open
Rather than making the user a Power User temporarily, it would instead be possible to use the Registry Editor to grant write privileges only to the "Office" or "Office\%vers%\Excel" registry keys.

Network Installation

Please follow these instructions when installing a network license of TreeAge products.

For all downloads related to network licenses, click here.

Server Installation

  1. Identify the server upon which TreeAge Pro should be installed.
  2. Logon to the server as an administrator.
  3. Install TreeAge Pro on that server.
  4. Authorize the software on that server using the License Manager.
  5. Test the software directly on the server by opening a tree and running a rollback.
  6. Setup a network share to provide client machines/network users with read-write access to the TreeAge Pro installation path.
Folder and share privileges must be setup to provide the appropriate access to users.

Client Installation

  1. Login to the client machine as the TreeAge Pro user (not a network administrator).
  2. Run the client installer on the client software.
Do not install the full TreeAge Pro software on the client machines.
You can download the client-only installers here.
    1. Client Setup 2008
    2. Client Setup 2007
    3. Client Setup 2006
    4. Client Setup 2005
  3. Test the software from the client machine by opening a tree and running a rollback.
  4. If the test fails, test read-write access to the TreeAge installation path on the server by creating and deleting a file on the server.
  5. If the test fails even after correcting any possible access issues with the server, contact TreeAge Support.

Table Folder

By default, all global tables will be stored on the server in a single folder (the "Tables" folder off the server installation path). Therefore, all TreeAge users would be storing their tables in the same path and might inadvertently overwrite each other's tables.

It is possible to redirect the default location for tables to use a path that is interpreted on each client machine. For example, if you set the default table folder to "C:\TreeAge Tables", each client would save tables into that folder on each computer.

Some organizations create personal user folders on the network that are mapped to each user using a common drive mapping. For example Joe Smith's U drive would map to \\server\users\jsmith while Wendy Jones's U drive would map to \\server\users\wjones. If your organization uses this type of drive mapping, it is possible to map all tables to a folder on the user drive (i.e., "U:\TreeAge Tables"). Then each network user's tables would be stored on their personal user drive.

To setup separate folders for each user/client, follow these instructions.

  1. Login to the server as an administrator.
  2. Navigate to the location of the TreeAge Pro executable.
  3. In the same folder, create a file called "TABLES.dir".
  4. Edit the "TABLES.dir" in Notepad.
  5. In the first line of the file, enter the folder in which tables should be stored.
  6. The change will take effect for each user the first time they start the software.
  7. If the specified tables directory does not exist when TreeAge Pro is opened, TreeAge Pro will ask if you want to create the directory.
