On Serial Numbers, Site Keys, and Copy Protection
DATA and DATA Professional use a simple form of copy protection
which easily allows you to manage your software license.
There are three codes which you will need to understand:
- Serial number - This is the code which we keep
in our database. It is the only link between you,
the user, and TreeAge Software. You receive a
serial number when you purchase the software.
- Site code - This number is generated by the copy
protection software. It uniquely identifies the
machine on which you have installed the software.
By itself, a site code is useless, but it is
needed to generate a site key. In order to get
the site code, you must install the trial version
of whichever version of DATA you purchased. The
site code is displayed in the License Configuration
window, which appears when you push ENTER when the
program starts up.
- Site key - This code unlocks the software on your
machine. Without a site key, DATA will run in
"trial" mode. Once you enter a site key (which requires
both a serial number and a site code), DATA will
run in "paid" mode, without limitations. This web
site will generate a site key for you.
The following picture depicts the relationship between
these three codes:
